IPM Course Offerings

B.Sc. Molecular Biomedicine

Molecular Biomedicine focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie life and the pathological changes associated with disease. This interdisciplinary program integrates molecular and natural science approaches with current topics in medicine to provide a comprehensive understanding of biological systems.

Its aim is to uncover the mechanisms governing complex biological processes at the molecular level and to investigate how these processes are disrupted in disease. This knowledge forms the basis for the development of innovative diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies to prevent, diagnose, and treat human diseases.

M.Sc. Drug Research

With its strongly research-oriented curriculum, the master’s program is aligned with current scientific projects and provides students with a broad knowledge base in the field of drug research. By independently addressing scientific problems and tasks, students are expected to gain the qualifications necessary for careers in pharmaceutical science, particularly in the pharmaceutical and related industries or in drug research institutions.

M.Sc. Microbiology

Students in the research-oriented master’s program in Microbiology complete required coursework in the following areas: general and applied microbiology, medical and pharmaceutical microbiology, virology, and agricultural and food microbiology.

The program is characterized by a high proportion of practical work and independent project work. All microbiological systems are examined from biochemical, systematic, physiological, molecular biological, and genetic perspectives. Key skills taught also include the independent design and conduct of scientific studies, as well as the documentation and presentation of scientific results both orally and in writing (including in English). The program thus prepares students for microbiological and molecular genetic work in all professional fields of classical, molecular, and applied microbiology.

Pharmacy (State Examination)

Pharmacy deals with the development, manufacture, application, and mechanisms of action of drugs. Given this broad scope, the undergraduate program first covers the fundamentals of chemistry, biology, and medicine, with some instruction in physics and mathematics as well. Building on this foundation, the focus then shifts to topics specific to pharmacy.

Pharmaceutical chemistry deals with the discovery, development, and mechanisms of action of individual drugs, while pharmacology focuses on the effects of drugs and how they are metabolized in the body. Pharmaceutical technology investigates the various ways in which an active ingredient can be administered (tablets, drops, ointments, etc.).

Bachelor's and Master's Theses

We offer interested students the opportunity to complete their bachelor’s or master’s theses in our research groups as part of the institute’s active research. Since the number of available spots depends on the supervisors’ workload, please feel free to reach out proactively and early to our research group leaders if you are interested. As preparation, it is a good idea to take courses with us and combine your thesis with a project or lab exercise in the same research group.

The IfMB & IPM Microbiology Department Seminar Series takes place every Friday at 9:15 a.m. in the Microbiology Lecture Hall (Room 0.006, Meckenheimer Allee 168, 53115 Bonn) in a hybrid format. We look forward to welcoming guests!
