Career Path
Thomas Fließwasser studied biology (B.Sc.) and microbiology (M.Sc.) at the University of Bonn and has been conducting research on gut bacteria and the human gut microbiome since completing his Ph.D., where he elucidated the central carbon and energy metabolism of the important gut bacterium Segatella copri (basonym Prevotella copri).
From 2021 to 2025, he worked as a postdoc in Fabian Grein’s DZIF research group “Bacterial Interference” at the IPM, where he played a key role in developing an in vitro gut model for evaluating decolonization strategies against enteropathogens.
Since 2026, he leads the DZIF Early-Career Research Group “Pathogenic Ecophysiology” at the IPM. Here, together with his team, he investigates the adaptations that enteropathogenic bacteria must undergo in order to colonize the human gut microbiome.
